AU Veterans Center celebrates relocation

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

The importance of veterans to our community was demonstrated yet again by Auburn University in a ribbon cutting to celebrate the relocation of the university's Veterans Resource Center.

Auburn University veterans and their dependents got a bonus to their veteran's day festivities Tuesday when AU celebrated the relocation of its Veterans Resource Center to newly remodeled offices on campus.

The Veterans Resource Center was formed in 2010 to increase support for and outreach to veterans enrolling in college after the post-9/11 GI bill took effect.

The center is the central resource for support for veteran students and can help identify academic resources, provide financial advising and give professional, personal and career development services.

"To me this really shows the university's support for us as an organization and for what we've done for the country," said Dan McClain, Auburn Student Veteran President. "Really, it helps us establish a sense of community as well and we just can't be thankful enough for that."

The center provides timely and comprehensive support to currents and former military service members including eligible dependants, by collaborating with veteran affairs representatives, the university and civilian advocate organizations.

Auburn University currently has 284 veterans and 416 veteran dependents enrolled this semester.

This new state of the art center will continue to help students succeed and make that transition from combat to campus to career.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
