DOUGLAS, AL (WAFF) -

A Marshall County football coach placed on suspension earlier this fall has quit.

Former Douglas assistant football coach Paul Pankey was supposed to have a hearing about his job on Tuesday but resigned instead.

State education officials are looking to take action against Pankey's certification to teach.

Marshall County school officials confirmed they accepted Pankey's resignation last Thursday night.

Meanwhile, state education officials say they've sent Pankey notice of intended action on his state certification.

Until his recent resignation, Pankey had been on leave since September.

He was also banned from the campus.

School officials have not commented on what prompted them to take action against the longtime coach.

Pankey also served as an advanced placement English teacher.

State school officials said Pankey can now request a hearing regarding his certification.

A hearing date has not been set.
