Rain plan executed for annual parade

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The nation observed Veterans Day today remembering the blood, sweat, and tears of the men and women who serve our country.

In Montgomery, the rain forced city and county officials to cancel the annual parade, and move the ceremony inside the city hall auditorium.

Amidst the sights and sounds of the ceremony sat 90-year old Tom Richardson--a World War II veteran and American hero.

"I'm a Hell's Angel. I flew in the 303rd Bomb Group, the 427th Squadron."

Back in the 40's, Richardson was nicknamed the "Lucky Pilot" because he lived to tell about the war, contrary to other pilots like him.

"My story's a long story because I was in the hands of the Russian communists and for 21 days was a prisoner of war," says Richardson.

It's stories like those most folks may never know as veteran after veteran could most likely recount stories of their own.

But it's the reason we, as Americans celebrate Richardson and his fellow fighters.

"We need to honor them," says 12-year old Dustin Jones.

"There should be more people here, if anything. They are at the mall, they're somewhere but they should be here today, honoring people that made them free," says Joe Berry.

Those in attendance did just that as music brought out the patriot in everyone and veterans felt immense gratitude from people young and old.

Richardson says events like this help him know his service will always be remembered.

Richardson says he was born with deformed feet and wasn't allowed to be in the United States Air Force at first.

He had multiple operations to correct his feet just so he could be in the military.
