GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Taking care of veterans was the theme of a ceremony in Guntersville Monday morning.

There was standing room only at the Marshall County Courthouse.

Absolutely, it was standing room only.

Retired Navy Captain Charles Larson was the keynote speaker who talked about the importance of helping veterans after their service is up.

For retired Army Chief Warrant Officer William Brennan, those words ring true.

Since January of this year, the disabled American veteran began helping veterans get from Guntersville to the VA Hospital in Birmingham thanks to a new van purchased by donors.

Brennan said he has 18 volunteers that help with the driving and said it's important to remember our vets the other 364 days of the year.

"When you have one percent of the nation fighting our battles, the rest of the nation owes them a big obligation and should help take care of them," said Brennan.

Brennan said he's also concerned about proposed cuts for vets in upcoming budgets in Washington.

He's urging residents to get informed and active and to call federal leaders and tell them to stand up for the veterans.
