TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
Out of the 22-million veterans across the country, 450,000 live in Alabama with more veterans living here than any other state. That number makes up 10% of Alabama's population, so there is no wonder why our state gives so much recognition to those who serve our country.
This morning, Governor Bentley talked about those numbers at a ceremony in Tuscaloosa. He also stated what he said is his favorite saying.
"America would not be free if it were not for our veterans. Everything that we enjoy as Americans and Alabamians, we need to thank our veterans. Because we would not be able to do that if it were not for the men and who sacrifice so much, who are willing to serve for our country," said Bentley.
Organizers of the service emphasized the Iraq and Afghan Wars. So far, 28 Alabamians were killed in Iraq, 71 in Afghanistan.
