MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Some
Tennessee Valley veterans are retrofitting a Vietnam vintage helicopter.
The
chopper is being restored into a living history lesson, and it's headed for a
dramatic comeback appearance in Huntsville's Veteran's Day Parade on Monday.
"Buck
Three" a UH1C Gunship was shot up twice during the Vietnam War.
The
Vietnam Pilots Association and the Save the Heritage Group found It rusting
away at the Huntsville Veteran's museum and took it on as a labor of love.
The
exterior has already been restored to mint condition.
"It's
a war hero, and it didn't get respect for about 20 years while it sat on the
ranges at Redstone Arsenal, and we're trying to give it the respect it
deserves," said Vietnam Pilot Les Haas.
Restoring
the inside may take another year, and its rescuers plan to paint its call sign
back onto its nose in time for the next Veteran's Day.
