HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Homeless veterans were the guests of honor at a special ceremony and luncheon on Friday.

The Downtown Rescue Mission in Huntsville honored homeless men, women, and staff members who have served our country with a Veterans Day celebration.

Following the ceremony, veterans were fed a special lunch, complete with all the trimmings.

Vets say it means a lot to know they are thought of.

"You have to have a heart for soldiers. They served their country - that's why we are here today. Because of vets, you have the right to vote and the freedoms you have," said homeless veteran, Paul Reese.

"It means a great deal to the mission - opens its heart and doors to homeless vets. It's really a shame in this day and age that we have vets who are homeless. Its reassuring and warming they have a place they can come get help," said LTC Phil Palmer with the US Army.

Twenty percent of the homeless population are made up of veterans.
