ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
As some Limestone County students celebrated Veterans Day, one little girl had a great big surprise.
She hadn't seen her mother since this summer, and she didn't get to see her military mom in person, but she did get a chance to talk to her mom, Army Sergeant Pricilla Sheffler face to face.
It was a big celebration for veterans at Cowart Elementary School in Athens.
The kids honored vets and active duty military - many of them relatives of the students who were in the crowd.
One not in the audience was J'Kevia Sheffler's mom. She's stationed in Qatar. To J'Kevia's surprise, all of a sudden, there was mom, talking to her via Skype.
They told each other they love and missed one another, and Pricilla asked J'Kevia about her grades.
She's a straight A student.
The Cowart faculty came up with the idea because J'Kevia is so proud of her mom, and she's always talking about her to classmates and teachers.
"From the very beginning, she's let us know her mom was in the military and how proud she was of her mom - also how she missed her mom. So, as technology allowed us, we decided it would be a wonderful thing to surprise her on Veterans Day," said Cowart Elementary librarian, Bonnie Downs.
This is a lengthy deployment for Sergeant Sheffler. She isn't expected to come back from Qatar until next summer.
