HACKLEBURG, AL (WAFF) -

It's been almost 19 months since the tornado outbreak across Alabama.

Now those who responded first in one of the most damaged areas in the Tennessee Valley are finally getting a little help themselves.

The Hackleburg Fire Department has a new home. Although it's not 100 percent complete, firefighters are operating out of their new facility.

The storm destroyed the building that once housed the city's first responders.

Now with help from FEMA and the generosity of others, the department is building back better than ever.

Assistant Fire Chief David Cantrell said this building has been in the works for a while, and to finally be able to park their trucks inside at night is something they've waited on forever.

Cantrell said his men are dedicated to serving and protecting the town, and the construction of the house just gives them an added boost of motivation.

"It's been a long road since April 27th. We were able to keep a few trucks in here a couple weeks after the storm. Of course, we lost all the doors, the roof was gone. Some of our trucks were damaged, so when they tore the building down, we had to move over to an abandoned warehouse and we stayed there with no doors, no heat, very little power until 10 days ago," said Cantrell. "So we're moving in here a little bit prematurely, but we had to get out of the warehouse we were in, and it's pretty exciting to see we're back where we started."

Cantrell said the department plans to be fully functioning by the holidays.
