Election 2012 is nearly over, but one local race is headed to a recount.
Madison County Probate Judge Tommy Ragland leads Republican candidate Patty Demos by just 120 votes. He was emotional when he said he learned he was leading in the race. In fact, he said in the early hours of Wednesday morning he really thought he was behind by a few thousand votes, not ahead.
Election officials said Ragland leads with 74,420 votes to Demos' 74,300.
But the race isn't over.
Officials spent most of Wednesday sorting through provisional ballots and estimated absentee and provisional ballots to be in the 400 to 450 range.
Judge Ragland said he's glad he's on this side of the count because he's never seen an election go to recount and have the winner switched.
"Six thirty I get the call from my oldest son and I tell him well I've lost by 3,500 votes, and he tells me, 'Well dad, the returns I'm seeing you're ahead by 120,'" he said.
Judge Ragland expects to know the final results of the recount sometime after Thanksgiving.
