PRICEVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The people of Priceville have voted and the town is going wet.

The count was 628 votes for those saying "yes" alcoholic beverages should be allowed to be sold within the town limits. Those voting against the proposal totaled 597.

Mayor Melvin Duran kept his opinion out of the issue, but said bringing booze to the town could boost business.

"I think being [that] where we are [at] with Highway 67, that's a major road and Interstate 65 runs right through town; I can see more restaurants," Duran said.  "Certainly Priceville can use the revenue, and it will definitely be a boost [by] alcohol sales, [but] it does bring some other issues."

It's the other issues that residents like Minister Mike Rhodes are worried about.

"It's not the way we wanted to see Priceville grow," he said.

Rhodes worries the liquor could bring more crime to the town and raise taxes.

"From a Christian perspective some things are always right and some things are always wrong, and there are some things more important than money," Rhodes said.

Duran agreed saying safety is a top priority and the decision for the town's new addition won't be made lightly.

"When we pass an ordinance for this we want to make sure that it covers everything so we don't have to come back and amend it every two or three weeks or every month," Duran said.

Mayor Duran said the ordinance will be strict.  He said the board will look into no advertising on the roadways, no one-can sales and they will also review other cities' ordinances like Athens and Decatur to see how they can make adjustments to Priceville's future ordinance on alcohol.
