BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Boaz is moving forward after voters decided to legalize the sale of alcohol.

Now it's up to the city to start the process for businesses seeking applications for a permit.

Residents of Boaz went to the polls Tuesday and passed a referendum for the city to legalize alcohol sales, passing by just under 200 votes.

The vote comes just two years after it was defeated by approximately the same margin. Mayor Tim Walker said an ordinance has already been drafted since the 2010 vote.

He said the council must now begin setting up an alcohol board which will consist of people like the police and fire chief. Once the board is set up, Mayor Walker said businesses will then be able to begin the application process.

Mayor Walker said all of this will be done with council approval – approval he doesn't expect to happen until they meet later this month.
