HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

It's a project that has been in the works for 10 years now, but ground was finally broken for the Defense Intelligence Agency/Missile and Space Intelligence Center's Explosive Ordnance Exploitation Operations Complex.

This project will replace facilities that are about 50 years old.

The new EOE facility will have improved capabilities, allowing further analysis to be done on enemy weapons.

Once enemy weapons fall into American hands, or even our allies, the weapon will be brought to the Redstone facility for further study.

David Shedd, Director for the Missile and Space and Intelligence Center, said that's often the difficult part because the weapons don't come with instruction manuals. By figuring out how the weapons work though, the department can create counterattack weapons.

"It requires analysis of its telemetry, its various aspects of what makes that system operate, and then ways that we can counter it," said Shedd.

The project should be finished in about two years.
