UNA women's soccer falls in GSC title game

The defending Gulf South Conference women's soccer champions couldn't repeat Sunday as the University of North Alabama came out on the short end of 4-0 decision to the University of West Florida in the 2012 GSC Championship match at Brosnaham Park.

UNA reached the finals for the fourth straight season but lost for the third time in those four trips to West Florida. The Argonauts beat UNA 4-1 in the 2009 final and then won the 2010 title by besting UNA 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie. UNA won the 2011 championship but defeated Valdosta State 5-3 in that championship match.

In this year's final, UWF got on the board first after being awarded a penalty kick at 26:20 of the first half. Tori Fish scored to give UWF a 1-0 lead.

Sashana Campbell set up Chelsea Palmer for another score in the 31st minute giving UWF the 2-0 lead.

Monica Malavassi set up Sashana Campbell for another goal in the first half, this time in the 39th minute, putting UWF up, 3-0. Nathalia Cerceau got the only goal in the second half for West Florida as she punched one in in the 84th minute.

West Florida out-shot UNA 18 to 14 but Chloe Roberts had nine shots for the Lions, including five shots on goal. UWF goalkeeper Sarah Story recorded seven saves in the shutout.

West FLorida improved to 19-1-0 overall with the win, while UNA drops to 12-5-1.

Despite the Lions coming up short in the championship match, UNA seniors Chloe Roberts and Jo Chubb were named Co-Most Outstanding Players in the tournament. They were joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Nikki Brown and Chloe Richards.

North Alabama will find out Monday evening if it has been selected for the 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Regionals. The Lions entered the GSC Tournament ranked fourth in the region, with the top six teams in the final ranking advancing to the post-season. UNA has made NCAA Tournament trips in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
