ATHENS, AL (AP) -
A float built by Alabama Marines to replicate a prisoner-of-war camp is the top-prize winner in the Athens Veterans Day parade.
AL.com reports the Marine Corps entry took grand prize honors in the parade Saturday.
The runner-up prize for
most patriotic entry went to a group of students from East Limestone
High School, whose float featured a shooting silver & blue star and a
large red sign reading: "Thanks."
The Athens parade was held a good eight days before the actual Veterans Day holiday, which falls on Nov. 11.
The grand marshal of the
parade through downtown Athens was World War II veteran Dempsey
McLemore, a former prisoner of war who served as a paratrooper with the
82nd Airborne.
