UNDERWOOD, AL (WAFF) -
A Lauderdale County deputy and reserve officer are on administrative leave following a deadly shooting over the weekend.
According to reports, the incident started as a welfare check. Family and friends were worried about Richard Fontenot who lived in a home on County Road 57. They called the sheriff's department and asked for help.
Sheriff Ronnie Willis said when his men knocked on the door, Richard Fontenot answered with a loaded gun pointed at them.
According to reports, the officers told him to drop the weapon. At some point, Fontenot made a move towards them, and that's when the deputy fired his gun.
Fontenot was taken to ECM Hospital where he later died.
The two officers were placed on administrative leave. ABI is investigating the shooting, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
They will then present their findings to a grand jury.
