Halloween treat: 115th soldiers come home

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

It's a Halloween 6-year-old Drew Nelson and his 10-year-old brother Tyler will never forget. That's because they will be going trick-or-treating with their dad, who has finally come home from the frontlines of Afghanistan.

"It's been pretty hard, but today's the day," said Tyler Nelson.

Their mom Christi couldn't have been more ready for his plane to land.

"I think that made it harder, just watching them miss their dad, and me having to be both mom and dad for the past year," said Christi Nelson.

Just like the Nelson family, dozens of others gathered to wait for the arrival of their husbands and wives, sons and daughters, moms and dads - all heroes of this country.

When the soldiers of the 115th Battalion came marching around the corner, it was nothing but cheers from the crowd.

These soldiers have been away from their families for a year, in some cases even longer, but on Halloween day the wait was finally over, and they were finally reunited.

"I can't take this grin off my face. It's finally over with," said Christi.

"It's just surreal, I guess. I still can't believe it. It will take a few days," said Sgt. 1st Class Kirk Nelson.

For many, it was a homecoming a year in the making.
