ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

A Limestone County man beaten and robbed is recovering.

Investigators said the suspects targeted him because he's an illegal immigrant.

Investigators said they will not deport the victim, because he is a victim.

Limestone County Sheriff's investigators said 27-year-old Tabatha Berzett told Sergio Vega she needed a ride to get groceries for her children.

When he walked into her apartment on Todd Circle in Athens, she wasn't there. Her boyfriend, 19-year-old Montez Taylor, and 16-year-old Cody Vibbert were there instead.

"[They] beat him with a baseball bat, took $3,000 of his money," said Leslie Ramsey, Limestone County Sheriff's Investigator.

Investigators said the thieves took little time spending the loot.

"They all went on a spending spree. They went to Buffalo Wild Wings, and they purchased shows and Carhart jackets. Montez and Tabitha got engaged and got engagement rings at Walmart," said Ramsey.

The suspects are in jail.

Vega needed 18 stitches in his head.

Authorities said his attackers targeted him because he's an illegal alien.

"I think they thought he would not notify authorities due to that because they lured him to an apartment where there were a lot of witnesses. The crime occurred where they live at, so I definitely thought they thought he would have some money on him, a great deal of money, and that he would not call the police," Ramsey said.

Neighbors Sirena Pugh and her son are charged with hindering prosecution for allegedly helping hide evidence in this case.
