HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Ranked nationally in a preseason poll for the first time in the program's NCAA era, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team will begin the 2012-13 season with a trio of exhibition contests against Division I opponents beginning on Thursday.
On Thursday, the Lady Chargers will travel to Middle Tennessee State for a 5:30 p.m. contest, and the squad will take on Vanderbilt in Nashville at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The exhibition slate wraps up with a 7 p.m. showdown on Monday, Nov. 5 at UAB.
A season ago, Roy Heintz directed his team to a 23-7 finish en route to the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and the squad returns nearly every member from last year's squad. The Blue and White finished 10th in the nation in scoring, 11th in 3-point field goals, and 15th in turnover margin.
Among those returning is two-time Honorable Mention All-American Jasmine Hammon who earned the preseason recognition this season after averaging 17.2 points per game last season, becoming just the fifth Lady Charger to reach the 1,000-point plateau in a career. The Muscle Shoals, Ala., native posted nine double-doubles including a 13-point, 12-rebound performance in the team's NCAA Tournament contest.
The team will practice from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday night; 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday; and 2:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
