ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

Parishioners of a small rural church in Arab wonder how someone was buried at their very small cemetery and no one knew about it.

Police have been able to assist the church in finding out who is buried there, but the circumstances surrounding the burial are a mystery at this point.

The Church of the Living God sits just outside the town of Arab off Highway 231 on County Road 1848.

Earlier this year, church goers discovered a fresh grave on their cemetery and for months began asking other church members if they knew who it was.

Sgt. Dan Henry said the church is a very small church and church members vote when requests are made to bury someone in the cemetery, although it's been 2008 since they've had their last request.

Henry said determining who was buried there was a difficult task.

"There's no marking, no headstone, no metal tag they normally put until the headstone is there.  So they began to question other members and other members - none of them knew when it got there or who it was," said Henry.

He said a part of the mystery has been solved.

They were able to learn a woman by the name of Gladys Norton is the person buried there.

How she got there remains a mystery.
