GLENCOE, AL (WAFF) -
An injured Alabama soldier came home to a huge celebration Friday afternoon.
Army Specialist Josh Wetzel lost both his legs after stepping on a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan earlier this year. For months, Wetzel has been recovering at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland.
Wetzel returned Friday for a weeklong visit for his cousin's wedding. He and his wife flew into Shuttlesworth International Airport where they were greeted by a cheering crowd. Wetzel was brought to tears from the show of support.
They headed to Glencoe with a police escort where Wetzel received the key to the city and a special presentation from the VFW.
The hometown crowd lined the streets to welcome Wetzel home as the police escort led the way. The soldier was smothered with hugs from supporters and wore a huge smile the entire time.
Wetzel said he was overwhelmed with all of the attention and support he received since returning home.
