DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -
United States Attorney George Beck, Jr's office filed a motion Wednesday seeking to dismiss federal kidnapping charges against Charles Dean Partin, the man accused of taking his step-daughter while she was in Alabama DHR custody.
The victim is a minor identified in court documents as "A. L.".
Court filings show that Beck's office has decided to defer prosecution of the kidnapping charges against Partin to the State of Alabama. The court granted the request. Alabama may take up the charges at some point in the future, though no details are immediately available.
The deferment comes on the same day a federal grand jury indicted Partin, charging him with transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines. Federal authorities can take up jurisdiction on that matter on the grounds of interstate commerce.
Partin and the girl's mother, Julie Bethke, allegedly kidnapped the child while she was at the South Alabama Medical Center for a doctor's appointment.
Partin and Bethke fled Alabama with the girl, only to be captured six days later in Ohio.
