MERIDIANVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A Meridianville boy is recovering after an accident in which a car knocked him off his bike.
There were lots of witnesses to this accident, including the boy's mother.
Miles Ogwu, 7 years old, was ultimately treated and released at Huntsville Hospital, but when a Crown Victoria came down the street and hit his bike, it left his neighborhood angry, and badly shaken.
"I thought my son was dead already. I was thinking my son was dead already," said the boy's mother, Esther Ogwu.
A distraught Ogwu said she feared the worst when her little boy was knocked off his bike a car, which witnesses said was moving fast on Bellvue Drive.
"And I saw his feet go flip up in the air. He stumbled, landed on his feet, stumbled and then hit the ground," said witness, Sheila Green.
Witnesses rushed to help and said the little boy was dazed and seemed in shock but managed to speak, even as a big welt swelled up on his head.
"He kept saying, 'Momma, I'm okay.' He just kept saying, 'Momma, I'm okay,'" said Ogwu.
Hours later, the bicycle was still laying at the scene. Neighbors said, however shocking this incident was, it wasn't something that couldn't be anticipated. They said that car and that driver were already notorious on this block.
"He's been seen a lot coming up and down this street, speeding excessively," said witness, Jonathan Parker.
"This same car has been up and down the street. Five days ago, he was asked to slow down. I'm not sure if he lives in this neighborhood, but he's been known or flying up and down the neighborhood," said Green.
Witnesses said the driver told them his gas pedal had gotten stuck, but state troopers talked with him at the scene, then cuffed him and took him into custody.
"I'm just glad that he's off the street. This won't be happening again," Green said.
The driver of the car, 18-year-old Jaylen McClendon, was taken to the Madison County Jail.
Troopers said he was arrested for an outstanding, unrelated warrant.
McClendon has numerous traffic violations on his record.
He was already set to go before a judge on October 29 for driving on a suspended license, an open container violation, and failing to appear.
