ARAB, AL (WAFF) -
A local teen is in big trouble with Arab City Schools after bringing a gun on school property last week. The gun wasn't loaded, but caused concern for school employees and law enforcement.
The student was out sick and came by the school to pick up his makeup work. He left a gun he received as a gift from his grandfather in the front seat that was later spotted by a school worker when he walked inside.
School officials can't say who the student is because he is a minor, but he could be facing expulsion. Superintendent John Mullions said the decision wasn't an easy one to make, but that student's actions broke state and federal laws.
"We're 100 percent convinced that there was no threat of violence," Mullins said. "The boy had no qualms or problems with anyone on campus."
Mullins said even though the student wasn't a threat, the school board has to recommend to the Board of Education that he be expelled.
"The gun was unloaded," Mullins said. "There was no attempt to conceal the gun but still, at the same time, bringing a loaded gun to a public school campus is against federal and state law and the Arab City Board of Education."
The student was set to graduate in May, but now his future remains a mystery.
"We're trying to strike a balance," Mullins said. "We're going to follow the law, recommend expulsion but we want him to have the opportunity to continue his life on the path it was before he made this decision. He knew better."
The student has been suspended and is not allowed on campus. Mullins said school officials have not picked a date for the meeting where they will recommend the boy be expelled.
