ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
Athens State University's first board of trustees in more than 30 years held their first meeting Friday morning.
They had a special guest, Governor Robert Bentley, act as chair.
This is the first time the school will be led by its own board since the school transferred from the purview of the Methodist Church to the state of Alabama in 1975, becoming a public school.
"It's a board of trustees now like every other university in the state of Alabama, major university in the state of Alabama. And the board of trustees will be able to make decisions and fight for funding for this great university here," said Bentley.
Athens State is the oldest university in Alabama. It was established in 1822.
