GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Marinas and other water-based, privately-owned businesses may see huge fees next year as TVA begins rate adjustments all across TVA-owned land.

Some marina owners in Guntersville say it could drive some businesses out of business.

One marina owner said no one wants to pass along the costs to the consumer, especially in these tough economic times, but they said it's also unfair because none of the rate increases apply to publicly owned marinas that they have to compete with.

Buddy Alred said he purchased Guntersville Marina from a bankrupt owner a few years ago.

He's trying to make it work and get it on good financial footing but feels TVA is now making that extremely hard.

Come 2013, private marinas will have rate adjustments.

For Guntersville Marina, Alred said that price tag is over $18,000 a year in extra fees that Alred said he will have to pass off to customers.

That's also $18,000 that won't be assessed to publicly owed marinas that TVA said will not be charged.

"The only way I know how to handle that would be to pass it along to the customers, and they're sure not going to like that.  Of course, the last time we had a rate increase, you know, we lost a considerable amount," said Alred.

TVA spokesman Travis Brickey said rates all across the many tributaries owned by the company are not uniform, and TVA is simply trying to make it fair for all private businesses being allowed to profit on public water.
