SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -
A Scottsboro man was sentenced to probation for illegally trafficking reptiles.
43-year-old David Langella was sentenced to three years probation for illegal possession, transportation and sale of protected reptiles.
Federal and state authorities said Langella traveled to Arizona to hunt and capture protected reptiles. He then transported some of the reptiles back to Scottsboro. Some of the animals he kept and some were distributed.
They said he violated the Lacey Act which prohibits trade in wildlife, fish, and plants that have been illegally taken, transported or sold.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service assisted in the investigation along with the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries division.
A judge ordered Langella to spend the first four months of his probation in home confinement. Langella was also prohibited from collecting reptiles or assisting anyone else in collecting them.
