DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Former Mayor Don Kyle will return as the mayor of the River City.

He defeated attorney Carl Cole with 56 percent of the vote.

After the long race that went into overtime, Kyle said he's looking forward to shifting from the campaign to his duties in the mayor's office.

Kyle, who ran on his business experience, said one of the first things he wants to do is get the city council together and resubmit the city's request to switch to a city manager form of government to the justice department. Voters chose that in 2010, but the city has yet to go that way, and Kyle's opponent, Carl Cole, ran, in part, on that issue.

Kyle said he's ready to take a couple days off then get to work.

"Of course, that's why we worked so hard the last six weeks. We were all tired on August 28th, but the last six weeks has been a renewed, even more vigorous effort than we had day to day before," said Kyle.

"I'm proud of what we did. I'm proud of all the people here in this room. I wish I could have done more for them. I wish I could have been a better candidate for them. I don't want to disappoint folks, but it is what it is and I commend Mayor Kyle on a great campaign," Cole said.

Kyle will be sworn in as mayor on November 5th.
