LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

One man is in custody in connection with a crash that killed a teenager in Lauderdale County Monday night.

The Lauderdale County coroner said the child, 13-year-old Da'Santo Ingram, was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

State troopers investigated the scene in the Underwood Community along County Road 457 and 251.

Investigators said 42-year-old James O'Neal Wilson was taken into custody in connection with the case. He was charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries or fatality.

Lauderdale County School Superintendent Bill Valentine confirms the 13-year-old victim attended Central School.  Valentine said extra counselors are  being brought in to help students grieving the loss.

Wilson has a criminal history.

He is currently awaiting trial on a possession of a controlled substance charge. That case is headed to the grand jury.

He was also arrested in 2010 for driving under the influence. According to court documents, the case was dropped, although it doesn't give any reason why.

In 2007, the 42-year-old pleaded guilty to robbery and theft of property.

"My eyes just filled up with tears and I said, 'That poor, sweet boy and his poor, sweet family,' because he was a great kid, a great student," said teacher, Katie Griffith.

Wilson's bond was set at $2500, but the Lauderdale County District Attorney placed a stay on him to keep him in jail.

The investigation is ongoing.
