Kyle vs. Cole: The face off for Decatur mayor

Posted: Updated:

Many cities across North Alabama will hold their municipal runoff elections on Tuesday.

One of those down-to-the-wire races will be happening in Decatur. Voters will head to the polls in two days to make their final pick of a new mayor.

There are just two candidates vying for the position are Don Kyle and Carl Cole.

Kyle, a business man and former mayor of Decatur, said if elected he will hit the ground running.

"I think I bring a tremendous amount of experience and know-how to the job that you only get from experience" said Kyle.

Cole, an attorney, has never occupied the mayor's chair, but he said he has other experiences that make him fit for the job. He has worked in the city for 12 years and says he has played a role in downtown revitalization.

"If you want a new vision for Decatur, if you want fresh energy and new ideas, if you want someone who has the courage not just to debate the tough issues, but to solve them, than I think I can stand alone as the candidate who can do that," said Cole.

A big issue at hand is the possibility of moving to a city manager form of government, an issue voters opted for, but has not been implemented.  Kyle said he will get a final answer on that.

"My position is that I will ask the council to resubmit that referendum vote to the Department of Justice for a final decision of either yes or no," said Kyle.

But Cole said he will make that happen.

"It gives us a professional day-to-day manager to oversee city operations. It also sets us apart from other cities and towns in North Alabama," said Cole.

However, there is at least one thing these two agree on, that is the push for bringing new jobs and new businesses to the City of Decatur.
