TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

Police have charged a suspect with attempted murder in connection with a Tuscumbia shooting.

Brandon Johnson, 23, was shot in the chest at a home near the cemetery around 1 p.m. Tuesday. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition.

Police charged Larry Jarmon Jr. with attempted murder Wednesday.

Investigators said Jarmon drove away from the scene in a small, cream color SUV and was traveling with a woman. The two were taken into custody during a traffic stop on Highway 72 near Yogis after the shooting.

Police said a third suspect was in the car with them, but was released at the scene.

Police believe Johnson was shot within a three foot range.

Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan said Jarmon and the victim both knew each other.

He said the two got into a fight about money, and that's when Jarmon pulled a gun and shot him in close range.

Police said they got a phone call from a man in the western part of Colbert County who said he found a gun wrapped inside a shirt in the back of his vehicle.

The man told police it was not his and he did not know where it came from.

After further investigation and talking with witnesses, police believe Jarmon left the gun inside a random vehicle in order to throw police off his trail.

The gun was recovered by police around 10 Tuesday night, just three hours after Jarmon had been taken into custody.

"Investigators responded and we were able to recover what we believed was the weapon that was used in the shooting yesterday along with some clothing that was described by witnesses," said Logan. "I definitely know that he was trying to get rid of the evidence and by placing it in this other person's vehicle that was totally unknown to Jarmon. I think he maybe created himself an out."

Jarmon is being held at the Tuscumbia Jail. His bond has not yet been set.
