A Huntsville father of three has a full-time job at UPS, but his real occupation, he said, is mentoring a group of kids who don't always have a father figure to look up to.

L.C. Smith and his non-profit organization R Fathers M.A.D. fills that gap by providing mentoring services for boys.

Tawonia Pressley, a single mom, recalled the time her now 16-year-old son told her he needed a father figure in his life.

"His cry out for help is something that he knew he needed," Pressley said.

Following the advice of her co-worker, Pressley sent her teenage son to R Fathers M.A.D., located on Sparkman Drive in Huntsville.

Pressley understood that her son needed more than a mother's care; he needed a male mentor.

"I think it was pretty big for me to be kind of humble enough to allow someone in that position and my life as well as my son's life," Pressley said.

R Fathers M.A.D. stands for "are fathers making a difference," according to Smith. He was about to write a book about the importance of fatherhood but he came up with a better idea.

"I felt like instead of writing a book for people to read about it, let's go out there and try to really make a difference," Smith said.

So he turned a small living space area into a classroom that teaches leadership skills, responsibility and the trials of growing up as a teen.

Smith also encourages young men to volunteer and become mentors for the boys. The organization also provides tutoring services.

And even though Smith mentors in his free time on a busy schedule, he does it happily every step of the way.

"I'll do this free until the day I die. The best reward I get is to see more guys actually make it and succeed in life," Smith said.

R Fathers M.A.D. operates entirely on donations. Mentoring classes are free. For more information on the organization, visit their website.
