ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Police are on the lookout for a man who tried to kidnap a 7-year-old girl from an apartment complex.

It happened over the weekend in Albertville.

Certainly a scary situation for both the young girl and her mother, but local police said she did everything right.

Albertville Police said the 7-year-old girl was approached around 7:30 p.m. Saturday just outside the Colony apartment complex.

Assistant Chief Jamie Smith said the man came out of the woods and grabbed her.

The young girl then began kicking and screaming and the man fled back into the woods, which were adjacent to the apartment complex.

Smith said her actions helped avoid a child abduction.

"Anytime they're approached by a stranger, whether there were gestures made toward the child or not, but you know, get away from them, make a scene, draw some attention to yourself to get people looking at you," said Smith.

The man is described as a black male around 5'5" around 150 pounds and was wearing a T-shirt, blue jeans, and had some facial hair possibly a goatee.

If anyone has any information about this crime, contact Albertville Police.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
