City council votes to expand Bridge Street Town Centre

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A new anchor store and restaurant are coming to Bridge Street Town Centre.

The Huntsville City Council gave unanimous approval to a $4-million incentive package to help pay for it on Thursday night.

They decided Huntsville is a growing city and people need more places to shop and eat.

As far as big names, that information has not been released.

"Bridge Street is one of the premier shopping venues in North Alabama, and it's always needed an anchor. This would give it that anchor that would be a draw to help those other businesses out there," said Mayor Tommy Battle.

A source said Super Belk will be added to the list of places to shop. They also said that there are two major restaurants in the running; Cheesecake Factory is one of them.

The project will call for the lake on the west end of the property to be filled in to make way for the new additions. Also, a two story parking deck will be added to the property and over 45,000 additional retail spaces.

"I'd like to see more stores that they have in Birmingham because Huntsville is growing, and I would like to see a Macy's," said shopper Erin Atkins. "I also hope that eventually they can get more affordable or locally owned businesses."

Now that the package is approved by the city council, Bridge Street could see those changes in 2014.
