Shoals man sentenced to life for murder of ex-wife

A jury convicted Tony Woods of murder Wednesday.

Woods was found guilty of the murder of his ex-wife Tammie Woods and sentenced to life in prison.

Investigators said Woods shot at least four shots at the woman's car while she was driving away, causing her to crash.

Woods admitted to shooting above the vehicle Tammie was driving, but said he didn't think he hit it.

When Oakland and Waterloo volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene, they found Tammie in the car with several gunshot wounds.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woods apologized in court during his sentencing hearing. He repeatedly said he was sorry to both families.

Nearly two dozen of Tammie's friends and family were in court for Wednesday morning's sentencing. Several were given the opportunity to address the court and Tony regarding the murder.

After hearing from both families and attorneys, the judge handed down a life sentence.

"I think it was wonderful. We've waited two and a half years for justice, and I think we've got it, but it will never bring her back or erase our hurt. But pray for the Woods family and our family, and a least justice has been served," said Tammie's sister, Peggy Coffey.

Woods will be eligible for parole in a few years.
