GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Guntersville City Schools were delayed two hours due to an overnight incident with Guntersville Police.

Chief Jim Peterson said someone knocked on the door of an apartment on Richardson Street around 2:30 a.m.

The homeowner chased the man off and called police. The suspect ran into a wooded area and police heard two shots.

Helicopters were brought out to look for the suspect when another shot was heard.

Police set up a perimeter near Ringold Street and Sunset Drive but the suspect was not found.

"There's very few roads he could have gotten out on, and we do not believe he left in a car," said Peterson. "We have no way of knowing this but it's quite possible the subject may live in the area."

Superintendent Dale Edwards said the school system will be delayed for two hours at the recommendation of law enforcement due to the incident's proximity to the middle and elementary school.

"We want to make sure our students and our faculty and staff are safe and anytime you get that type situation you, personally I want to err on the side of caution and make sure everything is ok," said Edwards.

Law enforcement returned to the area and performed a ground search. The suspect was not apprehended.

Officials said they will increase patrols in the area.
