HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A scam that started on the internet is spreading. Food and Drug Administration officials say hundreds of people who purchased drugs over the internet or phone are being contacted by crooks pretending to be FDA agents.
They say someone claiming to be one of their agents will call the victim and tell them that purchasing drugs over the internet is illegal and they will be prosecuted unless a fine or fee ranging from $100,000 to $250,000 is paid.
If the victim refuses to pay up, the caller threatens to search properties,
arrest or deport them, put them in jail, and even physically harm the victim.
Agents say the best way to avoid the scam is to hang up.
Victims can report their experience to FDA via OCI's website. Click on "Report Suspected Criminal Activity."
