MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The Montgomery Police Department Headquarters and City Jail were evacuated this morning due to a strange odor caused by a battery leak.
Around 8:00 a.m. the odor was noticed coming from a battery charging room. A HAZMAT team was called in. They evacuated MPD Headquarters and the jail and shut down a two block radius around the building.
It was determined that a battery leak was the cause of the odor. 10 people were treated on the scene for possible inhalation of the odorous substance. The source of the leak has been removed.
All prisoners have been returned to the jail, but MPH HQ is still evacuated at this time. Police service was not affected.
Columbus Street near Ripley Street is still blocked. Police spokesperson Sgt. Regina Duckett says the scene should be cleared by around 1:00 p.m.
