HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A Huntsville police officer is in good condition at the hospital after he was hit by a drunk driver.
Officer Charles Draper was involved in a two-car wreck around 11 p.m. Thursday.
Officials said Draper collided with a white Chevy Malibu at the intersection of Memorial Parkway and Lily Flagg Road in South Huntsville.
The Malibu was south bound on the Parkway when it turned left in front of the patrol car on the north bound side.
The officer was trapped inside his patrol car for about 10 to 15 minutes until rescue crews were able to get him out and take him to the hospital.
Crews rushed him to the hospital in serious condition. Officials said he had a serious concussion. Once he got to the hospital, his condition was downgraded to severe. He is now in good condition.
The driver of the other car, Tonya Brooks, was also taken to the hospital but her injuries are minor.
The north bound lanes at that intersection were closed for a few hours. Those lanes have since been reopened.
Brooks was arrested and charged with DUI and assault second degree.
This is the second time Draper has been injured in a car accident. In 2007, Draper's patrol car was hit while he was directing traffic. Officials said the driver violated the Move Over law.
