Free flu shots now available

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Flu season is right around the corner. Outbreaks can begin as early as October.

Free flu shots are now available to people in Madison County. They will be provided at several clinics throughout the remainder of September.

One clinic is happening Thursday in New Market. Vaccines will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the District 1 County Shed on Moores Mill Road.

County officials are encouraging people to get the shot because it changes every year.

"The vaccine we are using is a trivalent. It has three different viruses in it, two A strains and a B strain. Every year the CDC decides which strain is going to be more prevalent in our country or in this region. They reformulate the vaccine every year, so that is why we say you need to get a new flu shot every year," said Kathie Limbach with the Madison County Health Department.

If you can't make it to the clinic today, there are still two more opportunities in Madison County.

Next Tuesday, September 25, shots will be available at the Madison City Council Chambers on Hughes Road from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Then on September 28, there will be a clinic at the Bobo Fire Station on Old Railroad Bed Road from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

The State Health Department says they have plenty of the vaccine on hand. They ordered 125,000 doses this year.
