TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
The University of Alabama's Million Dollar band is celebrating its 100th anniversary this fall. The Centennial Celebration kicks off with two days of special events this weekend.
MDB directors from the past 100 years will perform in an Alabama Wind Ensemble concert on Friday, Sept. 21. The free concert, open to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Moody Concert Hall. A Centennial Gala for band members and alumni will follow the concert.
Saturday, around 500 band alumni will join the 400 current MDB members for a special halftime show during the Alabama-Florida Atlantic University game.
During the past century, more than 25,000 students have performed in the band. It is currently the largest student organization on Alabama's campus. According to the university, the band's nickname "Million Dollar Band" dates back to 1922.
