DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Somerville Road Elementary held a ribbon cutting for their new vegetable garden Saturday.
The garden is an effort to get students to learn more about eating healthier by growing their own produce.
It didn't take long for kids to dig in either. They started planting turnips, radishes, spinach, onions, carrots and mustard greens.
"This is not just about growing the vegetable, but it also involves science, reading and math. So, we're making a multi-purpose activity," said Somerville Elementary Principal Dee Dee Jones.
The vegetable garden was made possible through a partnership with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Decatur-Morgan Hospital.
