Man takes pictures of children, steals from backpack

BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

Boaz Police are seeking information about a man who was seen taking pictures of children and stealing items from a backpack.

The suspect was at the Old Elementary School on Sparks Avenue Wednesday afternoon around 5 p.m., according to police. Witnesses said he took pictures of four young people under the age of 12. They said he also took an iPod and other items out of a 12-year-old's backpack.

Police said the man is in his 60's, is about 6' tall and weighs about 175 to 185 pounds. He has white hair with a white beard and mustache. He was dressed in a white shirt, black pants, black shoes and a tie.

He was driving an off-white colored four-door vehicle similar to a Mercedes S class. He left the scene, headed toward Highway 431 on Sparks Avenue.

Police said the iPod was later recovered and they do not believe the man is a sexual predator. They plan to reinterview the kids for more information.

Anyone who might have been in the area and may have seen anything is asked to call the Boaz Police Department at 256-593-6812 or 256-593-6386
