WARRIOR, AL (WBRC) -
Joey Buchanan was stunned to discover the extent of his injuries. He was shocked to learn the man that allegedly injured him, turned himself in by accident.
"Some people aren't as bright as they think they are," Said Buchanan.
Jerry Lee Washington, Jr., 21, is charged with third degree burglary, unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, and attempted murder. Washington reportedly showed up at the Warrior police department Wednesday night to file a report because of damage to his car.
However, the sheriff's office already put out a bulletin for someone matching Washington's description.
"You don't go to somebody's house, steal something from them, run over somebody that is there and then go file a report against them. How's that going to work," said Buchanan.
It all started after Buchanan's father came home and discovered a man in one of the family's cars. That man ran off, but the Buchanans noticed an abandoned car nearby.
"So I told my son get the tag number and the vin number off the car. I'm going to go up here to the next driveaway and turn around," said Buchanan's father David.
It was at that point, Joey spotted Washington hiding in the brush and then run to that car. Washington then allegedly hit the younger Buchanan.
"Well when he jumped out, the man jumped in his car, and threw it in drive and took off and pinned me between his car and my truck," said Joey Buchanan.
Buchanan says Washington also allegedly tried to run over his grandfather who was armed, and who fired a couple of rounds.
"I can't believe the audacity of it. I mean he was robbing, stealing, attacking people," said David Buchanan.
Joey Buchanan sustained fractures to the right hand side of his body. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was treated and released.
