HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Huntsville Police responded to a shooting in North Huntsville on Wednesday night.
It happened on Birchfield Street off of Mastin Lake Road around 9 p.m.
Authorities said it started out as a phone argument between Keisha Hereford and her ex-boyfriend.
Officials said the man and three friends came by the house in a car and started shooting. Someone in the house retaliated, hitting the man. Neighbors said they heard as many as 10 shots fired.
"We heard the shots go off. When I looked out the door, I see a bullet had hit through my house. The neighbors had gotten into it with somebody across the street. At that point we hit the ground," said witness Michael Emmons.
Officials said the injured man took off running down the street after he was shot.
HEMSI took him to Huntsville Hospital. Authorities said he was conscious and breathing when picked up, but he was drifting in and out.
Investigators were on the scene with a K-9 unit, but no arrests have been made.
The victim is in critical condition and was taken to surgery Thursday morning. Officials said he is expected to survive.
The incident remains under investigation.
