Redstone Report: Military Working Dogs

The dogs train weekly. The dogs train weekly.
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Man's best friend is making his mark at Redstone Arsenal, but these courageous canines aren't your average pets.

They're not searching for treats or toys, and they're not taking a walk or playing a game. These dogs are looking for bombs.

"We have hid several explosive odors throughout the building. They will be required to conduct a thorough search of the building and locate the explosives," explained Director of Emergency Services Captain Jack Rush.

It's all part of a weekly training exercise at Redstone Arsenal where bomb dogs and handlers from area agencies come together to prepare for the real thing.

The exercise puts them all on the same page and helps them figure out what needs more practice.

"In case of an emergency, and we are called out, it's best to know how each other are going to work prior to that emergency," said Rush.

There are no real bombs at this theater they are searching today, but that doesn't stop these dogs; they know what they're doing.

That's probably a good thing, because these daring duos rely on one another in some pretty dangerous situations.

It just shows the old saying "man's best friend" really is true.
