ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
A man was shot near the driving range on Highway 72 in Athens in an apparent drive-by shooting.
Officials said around 2:30 p.m. Monday, Brandon Matlock was traveling west down Highway 72 near Mooresville Road on his motorcycle and was shot by 20-year-old Noah Andrew McGlawn.
"This is bizarre," said Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson. "It's out of character for our community. Just shows you do have to be careful and you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times."
Matlock parked in front of Eagle Up Golf Center, where MedFlight came to pick him up and took him to the hospital.
McGlawn entered the Chevron along Highway 67 in Decatur.
The store manager said McGlawn went up to an employee and asked to borrow money for gas. When they said no, McGlawn told the worker to call 911 because he had shot someone and wanted to talk with police.
The employee called authorities, the manager got on the phone, and then handed the phone to McGlawn, who by then was sitting on the floor.
About 15 minutes later, a Decatur police officer arrived. After talking to McGlawn, the officer frisked him, but the suspect told police the gun was in his car.
After turning himself in to police, McGlawn told officers he was mad at his father and just wanted to shoot someone. He saw Matlock riding his motorcycle and shot him two times in the arm and back.
Eventually, he was arrested and turned over to Athens police officers.
Johnson said McGlawn's bond will be determined by a judge. McGlawn is charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
Matlock is in good condition at Huntsville Hospital.
