Services set for well-known UNA professor, musician

Services were set Monday after the passing of a well-known professor and musician at the University of North Alabama.

Dr. Charles William "Bill" Foster, a longtime UNA professor and celebrated musician, died Friday.

A visitation will be held Thursday, September 13 at Christ Chapel in Florence beginning at 5 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held directly afterward.

Foster graduated from the University of Chattanooga, received his Masters Degree from Tennessee State University and his doctorate from the University of Alabama.

He and his wife Anne and their two children, Will and Melissa, spent 20 years touring with the Foster String Band. They were honored five years in a row as String Band of the Year at the Bluegrass Music Award Ceremonies in Nashville.

Foster wrote a number of published articles and documentaries. He also appeared in a number of television documentaries and films.

Foster was a professor at UNA for 39 of his 44-year teaching career where he taught English. During his tenure, he served as chair of the department of English, chair of the department of foreign languages and director of the center for English learning. Foster retired from UNA in 2007.

He was a common fixture at UNA's Front Port Storytelling Festival after his retirement.

In 2010, the University of North Alabama honored Foster with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Foster suffered a stroke Sunday and passed away Friday. He was 73.
