MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Two North Alabama schools earned prestigious honors.

They've been named Blue Ribbon Schools.

Forest Hills School in Florence and Liberty Middle School in Madison won the honors.

This is a rare honor for these schools. Only five statewide were selected for their achievements.

The Blue Ribbon is awarded for overall academic excellence or for making progress in improving student academic achievement levels.

This is nothing new for Liberty Middle School.

They earned this award a few years back.

Principal Nelson Brown said the students scored very well on standardized testing, keeping pace with the schools culture of excellence.

"It goes with a lot of hard work. Our students, our parents, our teachers, our community have worked hard, so we're very excited about that," said Brown.

Schools in Mobile and Baldwin counties, along with Piedmont, also won the Blue Ribbon designation.
