FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
A Florence man is in jail after he allegedly tried to suffocate his own mother.
Florence Police responded to a domestic violence call at a home on Duncan Avenue Tuesday. Police said Shelby Hurd and his mother got into an argument over prescription medication.
The argument escalated and Hurd grabbed the woman and tried to suffocate her with a pillow, according to an investigator.
The woman was able to fight him off and call police.
During the investigation, officers also found items reportedly stolen from two recent car burglaries including a gun, checkbook and paperwork.
Hurd was arrested and charged with domestic violence by suffocation, domestic violence third degree, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, theft of property second degree and theft of property third degree.
He is being held in the Lauderdale County Jail on $6,000 bond.
Hurd was charged with assault against his mother once before in 2011 when he allegedly beat her with a belt.
